sweet fall favorites

The taste of fall comes in a variety of treats

The leaves are starting to turn color, the air smells a bit different each morning, and the days are getting shorter. All of these signal that fall is on its way, but to many of us the arrival of our favorite sweet, fall treats get us in the mood early.

It used to be that as soon as the giant bags of candy corn and harvest mix hit the shelves, you knew fall was right around the corner. That was when Halloween candy came out in October and everyone was still brewing their own coffee each morning. Oh, how the times have changed!

Our friends at Starbucks created such a delicious treat with their pumpkin-spice latte that it has become a major sensation, and now you can find about anything you can think of in pumpkin-spice latte flavors. This wonderful concoction consists of espresso, milk, whipped cream, and pumpkin-spice sauce (sugar, condensed skim milk, and pumpkin puree) topped with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves. A Grande packs quite the sugary punch with 50 grams of sugar!

This year Starbucks is also adding some other sweet treats to the line-up. We’ll see a salted caramel mocha (mocha sauce, toffee nut syrup, espresso, and milk) and some accompanying bakery items. How do maple pecan muffins, apple cider doughnuts, morning muffins, and, of course, pumpkin-spice scones sound?

Dunkin Donuts is also in the fall sweet-treat game. They have hot and cold versions of pumpkin or maple pecan coffee drinks. They’ve also added maple cream cheese spread, apple crisp donuts, Belgian waffles, and maple-sugar-bacon breakfast sandwiches. Yum-O.

The candy makers have also jumped on the pumpkin-spice band wagon with last season’s pumpkin spice M&M’s and pumpkin-spiced Peeps. Caramel apples are also a fall staple, and Milky Way added a caramel-apple, bite-sized candy to the mix.

So go ahead and order pumpkin-spice latte everything. Before you know it we’ll see eggnog lattes and peppermint mochas.
